Community Site + Community Forums

What's the best way to provide a combination of blog, pages, and forums on one site?

I tried creating a community site blog and a community forum blog, but find the user account management and session management less than seamless. I adjusted the "new user" permissions to include "commenting" on the site with more permissive grants on the forums, but it feels like I'm missing something obvious. And I didn't even get into creating topic areas for the forums...

Am I making this harder than necessary?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

  • What happens if you give them the Contributor built in role? So gar the tests I have done have no issues.

  • I granted the "new user" the commenter role on the community blog and created a "forum contributor" role that allows creating and publishing entries along with comments on the forum blog. The standard contributor role does not include publishing entires so "starting topics" ended up in a moderation queue.

While it all works from a permissions standpoint, navigating between the two reveals the problem . The "Sign In | Not a member? Register" blurb at the top of each blog does not seem to synchronize login state correctly. If a user logs in on the community blog and then navigates to the community forum, it prompts them to sign in again. Worse yet, if you sign out on the site and then navigate to the forum, it says your still logged in. This happens in both directions, e.g. if I sign in on the forum and then navigate to the community blog, same result.
