Alternative Installation (not in web-root)

Vote 0 Votes

Hi,

i have got a problem: I cannot add a CGI-BIN folder in the web-root. I have got only the permission to add a folder subfolders of all root folders.

So I added the files (excl. mt-static) in a CGI-BIN in a subfolder. But while executing the install-cgi the mt-static-files could not be found in the new-generated folder with the path-root.

How can I install movable type?

Thx, Chris

  • Chris,

I really don't think you should do it like this at all. Just upload the entire tarball (tar.gz) file or zip file to your root, or to any subfolder, and extract/unpack/unzip it there, using shell access or, easier still, your file manager if you have a Control Panel. It puts everything where it should be and you're good to go. Moving files into this or that folder is really not a very good idea because you than have to tweak your settings and it's very easy to make a mistake. Why bother trying to be a mechanic when all you want to do is drive?

  • I talk with my provider. He assured me of installing into this subfolder, because this is the web root.

But now I have got another problem. Look here: http://forums.sixapart.com/index.php?showtopic=66591

    Thank you for your post.

  • To answer your two problems...

    1) You don't need to install to a cgi-bin directory. Apache can execute CGI scripts from anywhere it has been configured for that. That probably means you can just unzip all of Movable Type to your web root, rename the folder from MT-4.21-en to mt, and run mt-check.cgi from your web browser.

    2) That database error is caused by not having the right permissions on the database user account. You'll need to get your hosting service to add all database permissions to the user that you are using for Movable Type. If you have CPanel at your host, it's as simple as going to the MySQL module, assuming you're using MySQL, and telling CPanel to add all of the permissions to the user.
