Must I disable all community features to prevent new users from being given author permission? Since I upgraded any new people who register to comment are also being added as authors and can login and create new entries. I can't figure out where to turn this off.

Never mind it seems to have been a bug or something. It did it for two users and then stopped.

Not sure if this is relevant but Maarten just explained the following to me.
The "role" assigned to users who sign up using the "register" link is controlled by the empty user "(newly created user)". Whatever permissions are assigned to this user will be assigned to new users created by the system.
