I'm using 4.2 rc2.
In the past I've always been able to convert my index and archive files to php with no problem. I would typically go the publishing settings and change html to php. Then I would rename each of the two files that showed html as an extension to then show php as the extension.
Well now, with a new install I attempt the same process, rebuild, and I get a 500 Internal Server Error for both files. For me, my install seems to only work when I use html extensions for those two files.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Look through your Apache error logs. If you don't know where they are, your hosting service should be able to locate them for you. If you have a good hosting service, you should be able to just put in a service ticket to get them to look in the logs for you for a series of errors.
If all else fails, you probably have an admin console or something for your hosting service, and it will probably give you the ability to do some basic searching through the server logs yourself. If you find any error messages, just post them here.
