Unable to direct templates to publish in the site root

I originally installed Movable Type 4 in a subdirectory, /journal/, but while I want some files to remain there, I'd like the pages I have control over, such as the Main Index, Styles, and the Archive Index to be published outside of this directory. I'd love for the Main Index and Styles to be published in the site root, whereas the Archive Index would be published in /archives/ along with the archives. Unfortunately, when I tried to change my publishing settings to reflect these changes (by changing the site URL, etc.), MT complained that it didn't have the permissions to move these files to their respective folders. This was fine for the archives folder, which I CHMODed to 777. But how could I CHMOD public_html? Or rather, why would I have to?

I've never had a problem with this with earlier versions of MT, so it's surprising to me that MT4 proves to be the most fidgety of all of the versions.

Any help would be very appreciated!

  • It would be helpful to understand in more detail how each of your blogs are configured in regards to their publishing paths. What you describe is definitely possible, I am just having difficulty making a concrete recommendation for your setup. Can you provide more details?

  • Thanks for replying :)

I actually managed to get Movable Type working via a reinstall and some finangling of the directories. But just to prevent this error from occurring in the future:

I installed Movable Type in /publichtml/journal because the wizard wouldn't allow me to install it into just the Site Root. Then, I tried to change the publishing settings to allow it to publish directly to the site root, which it said was not writable. I can't remember exactly how I changed it, but I managed to fix the paths above to direct to just /publichtml/.

I have always installed Movable Type in the cgi-bin directory (at least in previous versions) and I was wondering if that too was recommended for MT 4.0, seeing as it works very well outside of the directory.
