Insert Image / File Fails

I recently upgraded a website from 5.01 to 5.12 and found that when editing a page, the "Insert Image" or "Insert File" doesn't work correctly. Upon selecting the icon in the WYSIWYG editor, it pops up a window (as expected), but it then shows: "An error occurred". In the pink area where an error would normally show, it's just blank and then prompts to go back or close.

An associate of mine mentioned that he had a similar issue after upgrading, but once he installed / upgraded Image::Magick and PerlMagick, all was good. I have since done that, but the results are the same.

Under System Overview > Tools > System Information, I see Image::Magick (6.75) is installed with no errors.

Does anyone have any other idea what could be the cause of this... or how I can force it to show details in the error area?

What apocalypse hit this community in the middle of 2011?

It's been a while since I saw or heard anything about MT or Melody. Some searching and browsing today has piqued my concern and curiosity.

Did something catastrophic happen around June or July of last year? I know that Six Apart merged with SAY and changed hands and that things were generally crazy at the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011.

But that doesn't quite coincide with the silent Armageddon that seems to have occurred last summer. Movable Type doesn't seem to have had a point release since the end of June 2011. Meanwhile, Melody, the open-source fork of MT that I never used but used to keep an eye on, seems to have disappeared soon thereafter. Its website doesn't exist anymore and the last activity on its Twitter and Github accounts was in late July.

But no information on movabletype.org, on movabletype.com, or anywhere else I can find seems to shed any light on what may have happened, or whether MT has a future to speak of.

Is the proximity between those two dates (late June, late July) a coincidence? What happened in the middle of last year? Is there still official development on either project, or is MT condemned to die a slow, withering death?

Excluding categories from blog

I am building a blog and would like to have posts that are related to a certain category not to show up on the blog, but rather to go to an archive page that aggregates only things in that category. How do I do that?

Also, does anyone know of a plugin or anything that would allow me to have a tag cloud only on that category archive page, not the main page of my blog?

Custom Field for Asset Not Appearing

I created a single-line text custom field for assets, which I expected would appear in the "Edit Asset" page, but it's not there. Where is it? Unless I'm missing something... is this a bug?

I created it within a website, and as I couldn't see it, I created another one for the whole system and, still, nothing.

I use MT Pro 5.12.

Blogspot to Movable Type

My custom index templates don't republish automatically

I've created a few custom index templates for my Movable Type 4.37 installation, mostly to provide variations on my RSS feed. However, I find that when a scheduled entry publishes automatically via the run-periodic-tasks script, these indexes are not getting republished at the same time. Is there any trick to setting up a custom index template so that a publish will trigger it to update?

About the MT version stated in HTML source

Of what value is Movable Type version information stated in the generator attribute of the HTML tag? Do any services/plugins depend on this?

I consider removing this bit of information, because I think that it could help a person who wants to exploit vulnerabilities of the Movable Type system. Especially if you're not updating to the most recent version, you might not want to reveal that.

Does removal of that info have any negative effect on performance or else?

Export Blog Entries/comments by Author

I have a system with a thousand or so entries and many more comments. Can you imagine how big the export file is to manually search for these?

I would like to export entries with attached comments by specific author. Maybe by author_id or by author_name.

Is there a simple hack to a .pm file to do this for me? I'd even do it manually for each one. (BTW, I am not a plugin developer).

Hi,

I'll preface this by saying I really know nothing about coding online beyond some basic HTML, and what little I do know now I picked up by trial-and-error editing of the CSS files to tweak my blog to look how I envisioned it. At this point I have almost everything as I want it, with only one problem: I do not know how to get the search engine to return excerpts rather than full entries. I write long entries, using it as I do as a publishing space for my fiction writing. Some of these entries run over 10,000 words and the search returning everything in full makes for long, unwieldly results pages. I've been filling in the "excerpt" field religiously but to no avail. I'm sure I'm missing something very simple, but I'm loathe to take the trial-and-error route on this one because I have no idea where I should even start. I assume I need to alter the 'Entry Summary' and/or 'Search Results' templates, but really need direction as to exactly which part of those files I should be messing with. If anyone can give me guidance with this I would be eternally grateful

How to use an image/symbol as a Permalink.

I'm after some assistance in making an image or some kind of symbol (let's say an "*") instead of my blog post heading. Would anyone be able to shed some light on how I might do this? An example of this would be John Gruber's Daring Fireball (found here: http://www.daringfireball.net). If you see his blog posts, you'll see a small Star next to the titles. Those are his permalinks.

Stupid Question? How to make a static homepage

I'm just starting with MT, and I'm already very confused. I've got a domain, hav it hosted with maiahost and had MT professional installed. I've successfully created a blog at 'www.mydomain.com/blog/', but what I really want is for my blog to be placed right at the domain 'www.mydomain.com' without the '/blog/'. I can't seem to figure out how to do this or if it's even possible. When I go to my dashboard in MT, I can see that I have a webpage at www.mydomain.com, but when I enter the URL on my browser it takes me to an MT login site instead of a homepage. I'm having other problems too (i.e. how to create a menu bar), but this is the most immediate issue. Hope someone can help.

Updating a post without updating timestamp

Hi there,

I have some old posts, where I'd like to do some changes to, e.g. removing fixed formatting or fixing typos. The posts in question are mostly older posts and I'd like to avoid to show them up in the RSS feed as new or updated post.

Is there a way to edit a post, without updating the updated timestamp?
I know I could edit them directly in SQL, but I'd like to avoid that. If there is a more high-level approach, this would be great.
