Hi everyone,

I've been a Joomla user for several years and have been relatively happy with it, but am now looking to expand what I'm doing with my site and change a few things. I realize I should probably just install MT and test drive it, but I'd like your thoughts on the feasibility of designing and maintaining this kind of site over time.

What I currently do isn't blogging. My site:
- static front page with some intro content/images, PHP includes, script to place a PHPList subscription form, a random banner (70 of my photos formatted as site banners), top and bottom menu and footer with some links to static pages
- photo gallery powered by Gallery2 and bridged into Joomla
- section of travel writing, originally done in bloging format, but many before blog times. A single aggregate story from a trip may have several entries (AKA a post every few days) or a single long entry. Some stories are big (30k+ words), spanning 10 large pages (with suckerfish table of contents menus). Photos in the stories are thumbnails linking to Gallery2 pages, placed by a TinyMCE addon that lets me insert directly from my Gallery2 content. There's also lots of CSS formatting that lends a newspaper/magazine style to it. Stories also have a PHP include that attaches an AddThis sharing button.
- extras page of various things I want to share (a blog-style list of a dozen individual items)
- customized contact form

Where MT comes in is that I'd like to expand my site to include a photoblog of my most recent work. I'm not particularly interested in the comment features of a blog, but I could take it and possibly shut it off. I don't really want comments on the stories though, but I could live with it.

Problems/hurdles: For the most part, everything is working and I'm reluctant to change for change's sake. But Joomla isn't playing nice with large content items and I don't want to split up articles into several parts. Further, Joomla's SEF addons don't allow SEF generation for my Gallery2 content, and I've seen at least one MT/G2 site where it's working.

I've spent a ton of time making my own code changes and highly customized Joomla and Gallery2 templates, which I'd like to keep (generally), but I don't see the kind of template options (maybe I'm looking in the wrong places?) that are available for Joomla/Wordpress and the like.

So, what to do? I'm not really after a blogging site, just a site that happens to have a blog. Is MT the platform to use? Are MTs benefits worth the time investment to learn/convert/customize, or should I stick with Joomla?

I'm eager to hear your thoughts. Thanks very much for reading.

Matt

I would want this to display a page similar to backup/restore which shows the systems progress and some debugging information about what is happening during the update. I especially want to see if there is an error.

Running XP/SP2 with Tortoise SVN:

TortoiseSVN 1.5.0, Build 13316 - 32 Bit , 2008/06/21 07:55:29
Subversion 1.5.0,

OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007
zlib 1.2.3

over the past few day whenever I try to checkout (http://code.sixapart.com/svn/movabletype/branches/release-41) I get the following:

I can view the revision log with success before checkout.

REPORT of '/svn/movabletype/!svn/vcc/default': 200 OK (http://code.sixapart.com)

I always seem to get about 8.3 MB and it seems to hang at the same point, I am able o checkout without errors from
http://code.sixapart.com/svn/mtplugins/trunk/

so I am stumped, it's not a major issue as the nightlies are available etc but it is driving me NUTS

Hi,

I have no idea what I touched or where, but every blog on my site suddenly and simultaneously is unable to publish permalinks and archive pages. Every blog has the same symptom: on the publishing settings page, the "preferred archive" no longer has a drop-down box with choices. It now says, "No archives are active."

Every existing blog now has this problem, regardless of when it was last updated. However, if I created a new blog, it does not have this problem.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to "re-activate" the archives?

(I'm using version 4.2RC3)

I'm having no luck with modules and SSI. The blog I am working on has PHP SSI set up and I've tried alternating between using module cache and not, but the modules don't republish unless I publish the templates they are included in. I've checked the files via FTP and they are not updating when I save them but the main templates do have the php include code.

I understand that there is a difference between saving and publishing, but with no way of publishing the updated modules alone then the whole use of SSI seems completely pointless.

One example of how I am using it:

I have a global header module that has navigation in it. If I decide to add a new link then I would like to update one template, rebuild that and not have to rebuild every single page/entry/archive/index.

Am I missing something or misunderstanding the concept?

Hi, I recently backed up a MTOS 4.1 installation using the backup feature of the site (I chose "everything"). Now I wanted to restore that backup on a different machine, and chose "restore", and selected the backup file to restore from. The message said "restore successful" (or similar), but I can't find any of the restored data on the site. What gives?

A good database schema documentation to move content, settings etc. manually, would also be much desirable, but so far, I missed any of it (being still a newbie :/).

TIA!
