Hi
I have seen this posted before for version 4 of MT, but no answer.
When I try to do a restore in MT 5.12 from a .tar archived file - you get to the animated restore screen and that is it. It just keeps scrolling saying "Restoring Movable Type." but nothing happens and nothing is being restored.
This goes on ad infinitum.
Is there a solution to this and can someone tell me why the restore isn't working please. Under these circumstances if I needed to restore from a backup how would I do so without using the Restore function in MT5?
Thank you.
Kind regards

Hi Isaac,
You would backup both your installation files and your database.
Then you would restore them and it will surely work.
There are many factors that might affect the movable type restoration process. One of them is the server CPU. On low servers that process may not work, especially if the blog to be restored is a bit large.
Another factor might be the presence of special characters, but on this one you would get an error saying that the file you've tried to restore from contains bad characters.
I would just recommend doing a backup of the installation files and database and restoring them.
Kind Regards,

Hi Mihai
When you say backing up the installation files do you mean the website files under "public_html" in file manager on the server or all the files under my actual domain name - "thesarayiahpost.com" in file manager?
By the database I presume you mean backing up MySQL database files?
Also given that the restore function does not work - is there much point then in the backups I have done via MT5?
Finally, thank you for your help - it is so much appreciated and I look forward to your clarification.
Kind regards
Isaac
Hi Isaac,
By the installation files I understand the movable type cgi-bin folder and the mt-static one.
As for the database, I understand your installation database, which might be mySQL, or one of the other supported database engines.
If you want to move the project files elsewhere, you may like to backup the whole "public_html" file folder, because it contains all your website files (including images, other file types, website/blog pages generated by movable type etc.).
You may like to stop making backups from MT and do as I've advised you on this topic :)
You're very welcome!

If you are asking about the best practice for data backup, I would recommend you to backup your "public_html" folder and the mysql database you're using.
That's what I'm doing myself on an ongoing basis.
Thank you Mihai - I do that anyway, but thanks for the clarification.
Whilst you are online - is it possible for you to provide the code to use for Googleplus, Digg and LinkedIn and widgets. The original thread is http://forums.movabletype.org/2012/04/pininterest-image-url.html and started off with you providing the code for Pinterest, but you were going to do the other 3 after your return from holiday.
Obviously not expecting you to do that this evening but when you have time it would be great to be able to use these widgets on MT5.
Kindest regards
Isaac
