Assets didn't make the upgrade-where did they go?

Vote 0 Votes

I recently moved my blog to a new domain, new address and upgraded from an older version of MT (I believer it was either late 3 or early 4) to 5.13 Open source. While all my entries from the previous address made the transition safely none I've not been able to locate any of the images I had uploaded to my site previously. As they had been uploaded to the site root just like my entries I had thought they would still be available. Does anyone know where they might be? I tried changing all their addresses to reflect the new site's address but all that shows up is the "alt" information and a little question mark.

Is it possible because I had used a different "html" code for wrapping the text then which is currently used by the "Asset Manager" on the latest version of MT could be causing a problem? I used to append hspace="3" vspace="3" align="left"/> to the code generated by the old image uploading procedure. Now the asset manager generates everything for you including alignment.

Anything anyone can suggest about what I can do for this would be greatly appreciated. I've close to 1800 entries and probably 1700 of them have images. Finding replacements for all of them is not something I'm looking forward to. Interestingly enough I sill see images from my old address showing up in google searches - although when you click on them you get a holding page from the old server.

  • Hi Richard,

It sounds to me that you've also phisically moved the project, not just changing the path and staying on the same box.

Then, from what you are saying I understand that you didn't download and upload all your images from the old server to the new one.

You should have actually archived all the old stuff, downloaded and uploaded it to the new server, where to unzip and continue with the upgrade and the paths updating.

  • Well as I had downloaded the entire mysql database from the old server and then uploaded it to the new server I would have thought the information would have been there. In the older version of MT there was no "Asset Manager" There was just an upload files application that I would click to upload my images. Could that have changed the formation of the database and resulted in the information form one database not being transferred to the new one?

  • The database is something and the stand-alone files are something else. You should get both the database (which contains the text and templates, not also the assets/files), as well as all the site files from the old server.

That's common with any CMS, not only with movable type.

  • Hi Mihai,

Well I was fortunate enough that one of my old hosts held onto the files from the site and was able to download my image files from them. Now I've tried uploading them to both my public_html folder and the assets_c folder but still can't get them to show up in the list of assets available for my blog. Can you tell me where I need to upload them to so I can make use of them in my blog?

    Thanks

  • Hi Richard,

    That's very good news!

As long as you upload those images back to the folders where they've been and then you change your blog settings to point to the new server path, you should start seeing the assets properly from the movable type backend.

  • The thing is I thought I'd done all of that - I've place the image files in the public_html folder which is where they were on the old site - and then changed the addresses in the original posts to reflect the new site's url, republished everything and there still not showing up either in the posts or as available assets. In the version of MT I had been using they were just uploaded as files and there was no "asset" folder - would that make a difference? Should the image files go into the same files as the entries they are associated with. For instance an entry from April 2006 is found in the following folder public_html/2006/04 - is that where I should be putting all images for entries from that time?

  • Hi Richard,

The files shouldn't be in the same folder with the entries they've been listed on, unless you've specified that path during the file upload.

If I were in your situation I would have checked a few entries for the URL of the image and make sure to match that.

The idea is that you should just upload them to the same folder structure from inside the domain root folder.

You may like to also connect to the database with phpmyadmin and look inside the mt_asset table to see if the path to your images is correct (pick a few images and check that).

    Cheers,
    Mihai

  • Success.

Thank you very much for all your help. The site should be up and running now.

  • You're welcome, Richard!

It's been a pleasure helping you get it up and running again!

    Cheers,
    Mihai

If you need to share template code, replace all the "<" signs with "<" or use this utility.
