Stupid Question? How to make a static homepage

Vote 0 Votes

I'm just starting with MT, and I'm already very confused. I've got a domain, hav it hosted with maiahost and had MT professional installed. I've successfully created a blog at 'www.mydomain.com/blog/', but what I really want is for my blog to be placed right at the domain 'www.mydomain.com' without the '/blog/'. I can't seem to figure out how to do this or if it's even possible. When I go to my dashboard in MT, I can see that I have a webpage at www.mydomain.com, but when I enter the URL on my browser it takes me to an MT login site instead of a homepage. I'm having other problems too (i.e. how to create a menu bar), but this is the most immediate issue. Hope someone can help.
Thanks

  • Hi Jeremy,

    Which version of movable type are you using? Is that v4.37 or v5.12?

    I would imagine you are using movable type v5.12, in that case you would still be able to set the blog to post at the same URL with its parent website.

    The trick is to make sure that on the blog, you go to:
    Settings -> General

    Look under "Publishing Paths" and make sure you get rid of the "blog" from both the "Blog URL" and "Blog Root" settings.

    Then click on Save!

    P.S.

    If you won't use the parent website at all and you want to make sure that you won't publish a page with it by accident, which to overwrite your blog main page, then you may like to:

    1) go to the parent website

    And from under:
    Settings -> General

    Look under "Publishing Paths" and add something like "_off" only to the end of the setting called "Website Root" setting. Don't do it also for the "Website URL" one!

    2) go again to the child blog

    And from under:
    Settings -> General

    Look under "Publishing Paths" and click on the "Edit" link from next to the "Website Root" setting. But there don't add something, but check the box that says "Use absolute path" and then remove the ending "_off" from the path, or whatever you've added from the parent website level.

    Kind Regards,

  • Yes, MT v5.12. I think I didn't explain very well, but I tried what you suggested anyway. My blog URL is now: "www.mydomain.com" and the blog root is set to: "/home/domain/public_html/"
    Now, when I click on "view blog" or "view website" it takes me to a page with a button to "Sign in to Movable Type."

    What I really want, I think, is to have a static homepage at "www.mydomain.com" and a blog linked to it at "www.mydomain.com/blog". I have the blog set up as I mentioned, but I can't get the website to show up at all - even if I click on it within the MT dashboard. It just takes me to that same login page.
    Thanks again,
    Jeremy

  • Hi Jeremy,

    If that's what you want, then revert back the changes you've made making sure that the parent website published on the root and the blog under the blog sub-folder.

    Then go to the parent website and use the "Publish" button from towards the movable type admin top right margin, just below the "Help" link and rebuild your parent website.

    After you do that you would see something posted under your domain root, which would overwrite the "index.html" file from your movable type installation, which displays now and bothers you.

    Then, if you want to change that default page that would show you, you would be able to do that by editing its corresponding page from under:

    Manage -> Pages

    This is valid if you are using the "Professional Website" template set. If you're using a different template set, it might be that the logic on the parent website is a bit different.

    If you tell me exactly what type of website you've created, I could provide you more specific advice.

    Kind Regards,

If you need to share template code, replace all the "<" signs with "<" or use this utility.
