Blogspot to Movable Type

Vote 0 Votes

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum to ask this but I was wondering just how difficult it is to move my existing blogspot blog to the MT platform. I'm sure it can be done but I'm just wondering how technical the process is. Thanks.

  • Hello,

The most important thing is to migrate your content from Blogspot to Movable Type.

What you could do in that respect is to create a template based on the movable type import template which is available at:
    http://www.movabletype.org/documentation/appendices/import-export-format.html

Alternatively, if you are installing movable type v4.37 (not v5.12), then you may like to try this plugin out:
    http://plugins.movabletype.org/bloggerimporter/

Look also at what users comment about the plugin, things like the need to create your categories inside MT before importing the data etc.

If the plugin fails, the other strategy with the export template would surely work. That way you would basically obtain inside Blogspot a file with all the data in the movable type import format, and then you install movable type, setup a blog name and URL and import the data you've exported from Blogspot.

After dealing with the content, you should deal with images and with the website look and feel.

Feel free to either download images from Blogspot, or use a download manager like PageNest to download all the site files, while keeping their structure, and then you could upload to the server where you will run movable type only the image components.

As for the look and feel, you could either extract that from the source code of your current Blogspot website and transform them into movable type templates by the use of movable type tags (combining the tags that you see inside a new movable type blog, with the (x)html/css from your blogspot current interface), or you could start with one of the movable type default themes and then customize its CSS at any time.

    Kind Regards,

If you need to share template code, replace all the "<" signs with "<" or use this utility.
