Upgrade to MT 5 Wisdom

Vote 0 Votes

Hi all.

Considering upgrading from 4.37 to 5.12 and it has been some time since I've taken on such a task. I'm reviewing the documentation and backing things up, but was wondering if anybody had some wisdom to share.

Thanks!

  • Hi Jim,

You should know that some of the plugins you might be using may not be compatible with v5.12.

Apart from that upgrading to v5.12 is recommended, since Six Apart stopped further developments on v4.3x, apart from security releases, but do continue the development of v5.1x.

What you may like to try is to establish a stage and to upgrade there your installation and to test if the plugins you're using work or now with the 5th series.

Also, after the upgrade you would notice that movable type v5.12 would create a parent website above your current blogs.

That's due to the new product architecture, which has as top element parent websites and under each parent website you could have as many blogs or forums as you like.

    Kind Regards,
    Mihai Bocsaru

  • Jim:

A few of the consultants and third party developers who hang out here have spent a fair amount of time working with Movable Type 5.12. I know that I have thoughts about upgrading a existing site from MT 4.3 to MT 5.1 in a number of different areas.

However, it's hard to do a brain dump of all of that. It would be easier for us to offer some tips if you were a bit more specific about what you are wondering about.

  • Hi.

Thanks for the replies. I'll go and double-check my plugins, but I don't recall anything unusual that didn't come with version 3 or 4. One or two may have even been disabled by me long ago (MediaManager?). Was just wondering if there were any common issues to be aware of.

Going to back everything up and just roll the dice and see how it goes.

    Thanks!
