Trying to figure out if there is a plugin or some way in MT to make a sidebar like the Reviews one at http://www.chipchick.com/ in the right hand side.
I'd love to add this to our reviews section - is there anyway to have it look for the first gif or jpg and just make a square - etc.
Also - on the FEATURED portion of http://www.chipchick.com/ - is there someway to make that type of image? I'm assuming once we have one way we can make many of these type of thumbnail images for navigation - etc.

Yes, it is possible to do that.
You could either extract the first asset and display there a thumb automatically produced by movable type or to create a new custom image field and then use it only for that kind of thumbs.
The first option is easier and doesn't involve cropping and uploading images specifically for that placement.
