After I was unable to find a way to permanently disable Zemanta in 5.12, I simply deleted the folder from the plugins directory. I'm not sure if that has contributed to this issue, but for some reason...
When I go to System Overview, Tools, Plugins, a generic error pops up saying "An error occurred", and my only option is a Back button. Removing the Zemanta directory is the only change made lately, at least that I am aware of, but even after putting the folder back in place the error remains.
Any ideas on what to look for, or suggestions on how to resolve?
Thanks.

FWIW, I often create a "plugins-disabled" folder where I move (not delete) unused plugins. I've moved Zemanta there in many instances without trouble. What I find weird though is that simply disabling Zemanta from the main Plugins menu works as well to disable it. Are you running under FastCGI? If yes, you need to restart your MT instance (or the web server).
Actually, I did move the folder to another directory, thankfully. I didn't see an option to disable in the Zemanta plugin settings, must have overlooked that...
FastCGI is not being used, but your suggestion is a good one, and is worth a try. MT is running on a shared server, but I will ask the hosting provider if they can do that.
Hi Seann,
You shouldn't have any problem if you just delete that plugin, instead of eventually disabling it.
So the error you're getting there should be related to something else. Try to play with the other plugins and see which one generates the problem.
How could you see that? Disabling the other plugins, deleting them or moving them to one level above your movable type installation.
Kind Regards,

Francois, my provider did the equivalent of an Apache restart, but that didn't resolve the issue. However, thanks for that info, good to know...
Mihai, I could access the Plugins directory at the website level, just not at the System Overview level, and I noticed that a Lightbox plugin was not showing up even though it was installed. So, I moved the Lightbox plugin out of the cgi-bin and static directories, and now the Plugins menu is available in System Overview. All is well.
The Lightbox plugin came with a theme designed by a Japanese MT designer (plugin author here: http://junnama.alfasado.net/online/2009/06/lightbox.html), and it has worked with my 5.12 install for several months...
So, not sure what caused that sudden malfunction. Possibly a change to a Perl module by my service provider? If either of you have suggestions on an alternate Lightbox style plugin for 5.12, please let me know.
At any rate, thanks very much to both of you.
You may like to inquire your hosting provider if they've made any changes to any perl module within your server.
Apart from that you may also like to reinstall the LightBox plugin, making sure that the files are uploaded in ASCII mode.
Thanks for the suggestion Mihai, that did work, kind of...
Once I added the Lightbox plugin back to the plugins directory, it does show up in the System Overview, Tools, Plugins section. However, it does not show up in the Website, Tools, Plugins section. There are a few other plugins that I have added before (like Paged Archives 1.4) that do show up at the Website and Blog level, but not the Lightbox plugin.
The Lightbox settings do appear when adding images to a blog entry, but the Lightbox function itself does not work when selecting an image. It has worked for a few months, so the issue isn't the plugin.
Strange...
