I downloaded the application "movable type" and it is NOT working. I tried to manually install it first, step by step. Then later found that I could download it via the applications menu on my 1and1 dynamic cloud server using plesk parallels version 10.4. I downloaded wordpress from the applications menu and had no problems, it runs fine. The site that I tried to put this on is josephdlyon.com When I try to log in, it gives me an error message. I think that I have all the required parts on my server to run movable type. It is volume 5.2. I don't know if I need to install perl bundle:dbi or what I have to do. I do not understand ssh or how to troubleshoot through that, all I know, is that if this is an app that I can download from Paralles, and all the other apps download just fine with no problems, then why doesn't this one work? I even changed the cgi permissions as the instructions said to do. Is there any way you can look at the required hardware/software to run this from movabletype.org and fix this problem? I can't be the only one experiencing this. Someone has to have had this problem if they too tried to download this app from the control panel.
My honest opinion? I am feeling like MT makes it IMPOSSIBLE to make this work, unless you want to pay someone to install it on your server for you. I feel like, they either want someone to buy typepad, or pay for their install. I followed manual instructions to a "T", that didn't work. Tried the app download (which automatically creates the sql database, as well as the config file), still doesn't work. I am so frustrated, been trying to get this to work for three whole days now! AHHHHHH lol!

Don't jump to a conclusion yet!
There are a lot of people using movable type and that didn't have such a hard time trying to install it.
Your main problem is that you are using 1and1 which is terrible in terms of hosting for movable type.
What account type do you have with them? Also, check well the versions of php, perl and mysql that they are running and compare that with the movable type system requirements.

If you are unable to install v5.12 on 1and1, I would assume you could v4.37.

I use a dynamic cloud server, not shared. It's my own. I have all the required versions for this to work. What do you charge to make this work? I'm not a rich guy, broke college student. Help? I do graphic design, maybe some trades?

Same problem here .... I tried for the last 3 days to install MT, it's just impossible ...
I uploaded all the files according to the guidelines, but when I want to reach domain.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt.cgi, it fails and drop error 500 messages ...
Don't get it why with apps like wordpress or phpbb, the install is ultra-simple, fast, and you don't need to spend white nights trying to make it work .......
