Refreshed my templates and lost everything!

Vote 0 Votes

I've recently had a number of publishing errors with my MT blog.

After days of searching for a solution I delved into editing templates. Not having any success, I followed the most frequent advice that I came across in my searches: refresh my global templates.

That solved the problem with publishing entries.

Now I have a bigger problem in that all the original code that inserted my blog into my website is gone. I have no idea how to restore this problem. I checked for back up templates, but found none. I need to integrate the blog back into the website again asap.

If anyone has some ideas or solutions to resolve this situation I would greatly appreciate any such help. I'm desperate!

  • When you take the decision of refreshing the templates, you should consider that what you are doing means to loose all the custom work from your templates and to have them replaced by default movable type templates.

Even on the screen from where you initiate this procedure it's written that you must be careful because you are going to loose your initial templates, and it gives you the option to backup your old templates.

Hopefully, you've left checked the box that says:
"Make backups of existing templates first"

The place where to check if you've left it checked and Movable Type created a backup of your templates is:

    Design -> Templates

And from the right sidebar, under "Useful links" click on the option that says "Template Backups".

If you find your templates there you should be a lucky man today and you could restore your template in a couple of copy-paste operations.

Be careful! Just to make sure you don't alter something by accident create a copy of the backup templates also on your machine.

Even better, export your whole blog or create a mySQL database backup before initiating the job.

Next time create backups every now and then (I do them very often, at least once a week) and ALWAYS just before a risky operation like the one you've conducted with resetting the templates.

If you don't find your templates under the "Template Backups" page, then your only chance is to produce again all your templates based on the source code from your site pages (if you still have a copy of those, or at least one of them...).

    Kind Regards,

If you need to share template code, replace all the "<" signs with "<" or use this utility.
