Error 500 - Internal Server Error

Vote 0 Votes

Working on installing Movable Type 5.12. I have uploaded everything to the correct directories, changed permissions to 755 and 777 where required. I can reach all of the cgi files including mt.cgi, mt-check.cgi, and also to the first page of the wizard. Once I type in my Static path names I get this error.

If I type in the incorrect paths, it'll take me to the language selection page but won't go any farther than that. Just keeps taking me back to that page.

I haven't seen anyone with the same issues that there problem wasn't resolved by changing permissions.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

  • Make sure that the /mt-static/ folder is not uploaded on the same folder with your .CGI files, but on the root of your domain.

Then, make sure that during the wizard you provide the full path to the mt-static folder, with the domain name included...

If it doesn't work, consider editing the mt-config.cgi file. Start by renaming it from "mt-config.cgi-original" into "mt-config.cgi", then edit the parameters in there, upload it to your CGIPath and finally set its permission to 755.

Then call your CGIPath in the browser ;)

  • Hi Mihai
I am stuggling to get movable type working on my website.
I have read all the install docs and forums and still have no luck.
I still get a 500 internal server error. I have uploaded the files using filezilla in ascii and binary as stated. I have changed the permissions of the .cgi files, support and themes folders, I have edited the mt-config.cgi file with my server details, I have played around with the mt.cgi file to direct it to my perl directory.(not too sure what Im doing here)
I am not very bright when it comes to web development and installs, still some what of a noobee.

Can you please help me try and figure this out.
    My website is www.gtacademy.co.za.

Your help would be most appreciated.

  • OK So here is how it all goes wrong.....
As stated in the Install documents, when uploading the files...
    quoted from the Install Doc.
"Upload the application directory (MT-5.0-en) without the static directory (MT-5.0-en/mt-static) via FTP to the cgi-bin directory."
If I upload the ("MT-5.0-en" directory / changed to "mt" directory) folder to a (cgi-bin) folder in my root website directory then I get the "
Error 500 - Internal Server Error"
Once I had moved the entire "mt" folder to my root folder, the install worked perfectly.( "Website root folder/public_html folder" has "mt" folder and "mt-static" folder in it)
When after Hours and days of trying to figure this out and then looking at the easier Debian server Movable Type install, I noticed that in that install document it states to put the "mt" folder in the root directory.

Problem solved. I hope this gets addressed in the install documents for Movable type..

    Thank you

  • Hi Johnny,

It's nice to have Mr. Been around ;)

Well, the thing is that you could upload the 'mt' non static stuff inside your cgi-bin folder which could be either inside the root, or one level up, as a 'cgi-bin' folder on the same level with the root.

You could also place the 'mt' folder directly in the root, as you did.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@workbenchit.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."
