I copied mt files via FTP to server and changed permissions as per installation guide
when I point my browser to domain.xx/cgi-bin/mt/ I get a ogin request page which is fine.
Only if I point my browser to domain.xx/cgi-bin/mt/mt.cgi to start the installation process
I only get a 403 Error. I checked the file permissions and even went so far as to chmod them to 777 to no avail.
My host is 1&1 in germany.
Need I edit .htaccess ? If so how. Thank you very much.

Martin,
Have you changed your cgi files to 777 ?
Lots of server servicess forbid to give 777(readable, writable, executable by all) mode to cgi files and it invokes an error.
How about changing to 755 or 705?
Nick,
thanks for replying. Changing the user rights does not have any effect. 755, 705, 777 all end in the 403 Error described above.
Found the problem. The hoster does not permit perl scripts. Switching hosts now.
If you need help on choosing a reliable hosting partner, I would suggest Pair Networks, Inc.
You could contract them directly, or through a reseller like me.
The reason I've chosen to partner with them is that they are offering an excellent service, well optimized for movable type.
Kind Regards,
