MT 5 - Comments not notifying by email or RSS feed

Vote 0 Votes

I had what I thought was a weird glitch, but I'm new to Movable Type and started right in with MT5, probably too early since there's not a lot of documentation on it yet. I set my preferences for my blogs to notify me by email whenever there are comments. For one account, it does this; for the other, which is the account that owns the blog, I get no notification. It seems odd that it would ignore the owner, but I figured I was missing something. So instead I subscribed to the RSS feed for the comments, and that was working fine for both my accounts and both my blogs. Except that now, all of a sudden, it's not. It just stopped sending me feeds of new comments waiting for approval. I tried resubscribing to the feed to be sure it was up to date, but that made no difference. My entries feed is working just fine - it's just the comments feed that seems to be hung up or stopped. Is there a way to force it to restart, or something I should be changing or reinstalling?

  • i have the same problem like yours, hope there could be anyone who could help us on this matter.

  • Movable Type notifies the ENTRY or PAGE AUTHOR when there is a comment posted on that entry or page, not the owner.

So, if your blog has say 3 authors, each author would get an email notification when a comment is made on the posts made on that specific author's posts.

Which RSS feed for comments are you referring to, as movable type doesn't generate such an RSS feed out of the box?

You could refer to an RSS Feed with comment updates only if you've created a custom one yourself which to allow this.

Otherwise, you've subscribed to an RSS Feed with the latest posts and the reason you get no notification is that you didn't post any news since your latest notification ;)

  • Right. But I'm the owner and the author, and I'm not getting the notifications by email. I have a second author account, and it does receive the notifications (or it did last week). So it appears to me that each author is getting notification, UNLESS that author is also the owner.

And now I'm not getting the RSS feed of the comment notifications, which MT5 does offer out of the box. On the "Manage Comments" page, in the "Quickfilters" box, there is an option for "Comments Feed," which helpfully delivered the pending comments and quicklinks for publishing or marking as spam. This has stopped working, too.

  • Forget about owner and author, the email notification is sent to the post author period. No more discussion on that as we're wasting time ;)

As for the "Comments Feed" from inside MT Admin, that is for when you are logged to your MT Admin, not for public use, or for subscribing to it with a feed reader.

  • Are you talking about MT5? Because when I click on the Comments Feed, which has the RSS logo, it automatically offers to add it to my Google Reader. What over purpose would it serve?

  • Trust me Carl :)

That thing is for when you are logged in to the MT Admin.

It is not a Comments Feed for general use, that you could syndicate wherever you are, or that you could give to other people, but only a filter for yourself when you are logging to your MT Admin and you want to see a feed with the latest comments...

You could create a Comments' Feed yourself under:

    Design => Templates

That would do what you are looking. Until then the one from inside MT Admin is for when you connect there.

  • I meant "other" purpose, not "over" purpose

  • The only one I've mentioned to you earlier.

When you are logged in to the MT Admin you could see that feed if you want...

  • Okay. But it worked before, it still works for one of my accounts, and it is still not sending email notification to the post author. So as far as I can see nothing is solved. I appreciate the effort.

  • If it does for one, it means it does also for the other.

Make sure that the email provided for the other author is good and that the notification wasn't filtered out as junk/spam.

  • Yes, I have checked those things. As I said, on one day it worked, and on the next day it did not.

  • It makes no sense. Maybe the server sendmail was down or something...
