I haven't used MT in years, but my other half wants to start blogging again and preferred MT to WP.
I have the files installed as follows:
/public_html/cgi-bin/mt/ - all app files except for mt-static
/public_html/mt-static
blog will be at /public_html/blog
I followed the instructions but kept getting a 500 error - the files could never be found.
Could anyone please just tell me if the folder locations are correct, and how the permissions should be set? The troubleshooting page (http://www.movabletype.org/documentation/installation/troubleshooting.html) is a little confusing.
Thanks so much

A 500 error is not that the files can not be found, does mt-check.cgi work? Should be http://www.domain.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-check.cgi
yes, mt-check worked.
i am now getting a different error - that access is being denied to my db - which is odd as i have the info correct in mt-config. (db, db user, db p/w) - i also have the cgipath and staticwebpath set there correctly.
this is so exhausting - i've spent far too much time on it but i feel like i'm close to getting it to work.
Finally! It required deleting the db and then re-creating it and the mt-config file - well that's what it took to work. Thanks for your response, Rob.
Worth mentioning for this topic is that sometimes people that are hosting with 1and1.com could get 500 Error messages.
It works also on 1and1.com, but from time to time one would get 500 Error messages.
So just deleting the db and then re-creating db will solve it all?. I will try it since I can fix it anyway, hope it work.

Iornaoha - Since I'm not a php expert (far from it, in fact!) I can't go through the db and recognize any problems, so since I am just starting the site (therefore have no posts to worry about), deleting the db got rid of any glitches/errors. It also helps to not be really tired when doing the install. LOL
I'm having the same issue...except my http://domain.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-check.cgi isn't working either, both getting:

Does anyone have any help or input? I'm stuck here, thanks.
