I am setting up a new site w/MT, and have hit a strange problem.
I have this chunk of code:
<mt:Entries lastn="20" sort_by="created_on" sort_order="descend"> <$mt:Include module="Entry Summary"$> </mt:Entries>
Until today, this did what I expected. It showed Entry Summaries for the last 20 entries, sorted by creation date with the most recently created entry first.
Today I reached the 20th posting to this site, and this tag no longer works as expected. Once the number of Entries passed the lastn value (20) the listing of Entry Summaries is sorted by authored_on_date, which I don't want.
In the above code I changed the lastn value to 30 and the sorting works again, but I expect the problem to return once I reach 30 entries. It seems like when the number of entries passes the lastn value the sort_by switch is ignored, though FWIW the sort_order switch is honored.

I might be mistaken, but I believe that the "lastn" attribute is applied only to the authored on date. You may want to try the "limit" attribute instead, i.e.:
You called it, Tim. limit and lastn are similar but function differently. Thanks! This works perfectly now. Awesome.
