Ok I have read the documents from front to back. For all the versions now. I am having trouble after logging in. I enter my user name, password. Then I am logged in, and the screeen says it is time to upgrade. So I click the button and the process begins. The screen reads UPGRADING DATABASE....STARTING UPGRADE. It never moves after this. This is about the tenth time I try it. Now I am gonna leave it overnight to see if hopefully by morning it is completed.
Is this normal, or is this a problem. At present, I believe it is a problem. I cannot see anything in the documents stating it takes a long time to upgrade. In fact, I keep reading in the forums that "After a few minutes" it should be completed.
I am currently upgrading from 2.6 to 3.2, and following the steps to be sure of a smooth upgrade to 4.32 and eventually 5. Next inline would be following MT suggestions 3.38, but as you can read, I am stuck.
Do you have any suggestions for me.
Thanks Richard ralopez1@msn.com

This may be either the cause of an improper upgrade (likely), or of the usage of fastCGI (which I don't think it is the case).
If it would have been fastCGI, a server restart would have been needed.
Would assume that your problem is the upgrade which should be done by completely removing the old files and placing it the new installation files...
Make sure you always have backups!
Another reason could be a damaged berkeley database (if you are using that) or a damaged mysql database (you could try to fix using phpmyadmin "CHECK TABLE" and "REPAIR TABLE" commands).
Available for consultancy on fixing, no matter what the reason is. I specialize in fixing database issues.
Since you're starting from such an old version, it would likely be easiest for you to just export your blog in 2.6 and import it into a clean installation of 4.3. That shouldn't cause you any grief at all unless you have some very customized templates.
Do you see any JavaScript errors on the page?
There is an error on IE8 and Google Chrome, but not in Firefox. This is the report I get in IE8

Thanks, I surely hopes this hints to what my problem is.
Also my Database was repaired and is working right now, still having the same problem as before.

Richard, make sure that you have StaticWebPath defined!
Thanks a Million,
That did the trick, at first it came up with an error in IE, so I decided to try it in Firefox. It was successful that way.
Now, of course I am missing my style sheet it appears, so I will relocate it to the new version.
My next question if you do not mind is this, would you recommend I just go ahead now and proceed to installing MT 3.8 now and move right on along to 4.3 right after without worrying about the minor missing parts now. In other words ignore my style sheet and other minor appearance problems and just proceed to move step by step until I reach my final goal of MT's latest version and then concentrate on my sites appearance?
Thanks again
Richard

You're welcome Richard!
It depends on how complex your templates are (actually how custom their are) and how much time you have for this task.
Ideally you would either export the posts and import on v4.32 (make sure the basename field is on or hack MT to export that as well) and then customize the MT v4.x templates to your needs.
Alternatively, an easy approach is to upgrade to v4.32 and then to refresh the templates to a v4.x template set and then again to customize the MT v4.x templates to your needs.
Finally, the easiest/quickest approach is to upgrade to v4.32 and leave the templates as they are, but you will be using old template coding, old javascript file etc (some comments-related settings won't be usable etc.). This easy approach would involve minor refinements to some templates for replacing obsolete tags or functions (like opening comments and trackbacks in a popup windows which is not anymore available).
Ok clean install, I had no choice, it did not recognize an upgrade so it started and completed a clean install. Now I have plenty of clutter that I must go through on my server. Or I could just revert to an earlier installation and start again.
I figure it did this since 4.32 does not support berkeley database. So I moved on to MySql. However I don't quite understand how to import all my previous installs Database. When you mention posts, does this refer to the database, what about the archives and such and such.
Thank you
Richard
Here's my problem: I ended up doing an install by deleting the app directory and uploading the new stuff (v 5.1) and then upgrading the database. Everything went well until it was time to log into the back end to start blogging. I ended up with the 500 error. All the CGI scripts in the app directory have permissions of 755, so I have no idea what to do. Do you?
