Select a top level category

I thought I'd find the question already here -- perhaps I didn't use the right search keywords -- but I would think there'd be an elegant and simple way to create a category archive for just the subcategories under one top level category. I can't figure out how to do that, though. Any solutions?

Category A
subcat1
subcat2
subcat3
Category B
subcat5
subcat6
subcat7

I just want a category widget and category archive for Category A and another for Category B. Can't figure out with MT 4 how to do this.
