Movable Type completely stopped working

hey,
reasonably comfortable with code, but not a programmer, and way in over my head. whenever i try to do anything with Movable Type [running 3.33] i get the following error:

'Got an error: DBD driver has not implemented the AutoCommit attribute at /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/i686-linux/DBI.pm line 672.'

do not even know where to start with this, can anyone help?

was working on clearing out a bunch of spam comments before [1] upgrading to the current version and [2] enabling authentication, and the thing just broke.
