What does Following actually do in Motion?

I've been playing around with Motion, seeing if it could be of use...
But I'm wondering, what does Following actually do? I expected something twitter-like, so that you can Follow one another's activities, but it doesn't seem to do more than add eachothers icons to the profile page.
Am I doing something wrong, or did I just expect too much?

btw, I hope this is the right forum for this question, the different forum categories aren't really.... distinctive to say the least.
