Accept Comments Isnt Working, MT CMS isn't updating my blog according to the saved preferences

Vote 0 Votes

Hi there!

I’ve switched off the option ‘Accept comments’ a few days ago at Comment Settings in Movable Type for my blog due to spam. Today I turned the option ‘on’ again so that comments are visible underneath my posts and people can comment again. Unfortunately, after a few times rebuilding/publishing, the comment section at my posts isn’t coming back.

When I select a post through one of my archives, e.g. category, the entry looks like this: http://www.basschutte.nl/mt/archives/2008/…ten_reclame.php

When I select a post by clicking on the ‘recent reactions’ part on my homepage I do see comments, but the page isn’t what it used to be: http://www.basschutte.nl/mt/archives/2005/…osuitirak.php

I would really like to see that the MT CMS is updating my blog according to the saved preferences…

Do you guys know what’s wrong and why I don’t see my comments back? Is it something with disabled macros … ?

Thanks in advance!

I’ve posted this question also on the ‘old’ MT forum. My individual archive template code is partially there also….

  • If you look at an entry on the edit screen is the comments button ticked under feedback?

  • Thanks for your reply.
I've double checked the checkboxes... but can't find the problem:
    - I've enabled accept comments for the entry (under Feeback on the entry page)
    - I've enabled "Accept Comments - If enabled, comments will be accepted." in the comment settings of my blog
    - I've not enabled "Disable comments for all blogs' in the feedback section (masterswitch) System: Feedback Settings.

I've updated my weblog. It's now running with MT4.23, the latest MT software. After several rebuild the problem isn't solved.

As an early adopter of Movable Type it might be that my are old ...
Too be sure you can find my code (for the comment part on my weblog) in this thread here: http://forums.sixapart.com/index.php?showtopic=67385

You might be able to spot some differences or problems. Thanks in advance for the time and effort!

  • Nope... I did not check the box to disable feedback under the system preferences....

  • Well, if the source code for this is any indication, you have no references to any of the JavaScript code that Movable Type uses to enable commenting. Your best bet is to create a temporary new blog based on the Classic Blog template set, and try to merge over the JavaScript to your current blog.

  • Thanks Mike T!

I'll try this in the next couple of days. Hope it works! :-)

  • I'm having a similar problem comments works on some entries but not on others. It shows the area to comment at the bottom of the article, but the sign in text isn't there and when you submit your comment the fields just go blank and nothing happens.

  • @ Mike T and Rob Kenny

I've fixed the 'comments' and 'commenting' on my blog!

Following Mike T's advice I've started a new blog and checked which were changed. After a few hours of wrestling with the code I managed to comment on blogposts and see the comments of others. I'm happy again! :-)

Thanks for the time and advice!

  • I am having a similar problem with the comments system. I had problems turning on comments on a site, so I generated a new one thinking I had done something wrong. Everything worked okay on this new site until I decided to temporarily turn off commenting in the blog preferences. This morning, I came back and turned comments back on and no combination of fiddling gets comments to work.

As best as I can figure it out, setting the comments off (as @base mentioned in his posting) is a one-way ticket. That is, you can not turn the commenting feature on again. I am publishing a static site.

If someone has gotten around this issue, please let me know.

    • Maurice

I have figured out the problems and it appears to have to do with the Comment prefs and the Registration prefs being out of sync.

I have the Comment prefs set to "immediately accept comments from anyone", but I get an warning on the Registration prefs: "Note: You have selected to accept comments from authenticated commenters only but authentication is not enabled. In order to receive authenticated comments, you must enable authentication." Also, curiously, the "Allow Anonymous" option is no longer activated. I believe it is because these two pref sections are out of sync, they cause the Commenting system not to activate.

By resetting the registrations prefs and working back to my earlier Registration settings, I was able to activate the Comments. The Registrations prefs are now set to "Allow Anonymous" postings, as before.

      • Hi Maurice,

After fiddling with the comment preferences in my blog system I've reached the bug of the 'comment prefs' and 'registration prefs' being out of sync again.

When I post a comment on my blog it now says: "Your comment has been received and held for approval by the blog owner." But in my preferences it says 'Allow Anonymous postings'.

Could you please tell me which steps you made to reset both the preferences?

To Movable Type Team: Any idea if this bug is going to be fixed in the new version of MT? I'm getting loads of comment spam (autoform) but I'm afraid to change anything because of this weird out of sync issue.

        Hope to hear from you!

        Thanks in advance.

        • Check your settings for "Immediately approve comments from" in Preferences->Comments

          • Hi Mike,

            Thanks again for responding.

The 'immediately approve comments' was already checked for 'anyone'. But I've saved the preferences (again) and even rebuild my blog again.

When commenting on a entry I still see the page with the notification: "Your comment has been received and held for approval by the blog owner." .....

            :-(

  • Anyone ?? :-(

  • Is it possible to 'reset' the registration preferences / settings?
