I’d like to have the ability from within MT to define custom data types or content types. Right now Custom Fields does give the ability to define a custom “content type” for an entry, category or page.
But in many cases I want discreet entry types, so, I’d like to be able to have one set of fields on one entry type (menu: Create: Entry) and a different set of fields on another entry type (menu: Create: Bio Entry).
I guess the only way to add stuff to the “Create” menu is to build a plugin but being a newbie in that arena I have no clue if it’s viable. A lot of CMS’s provide the ability to create these custom “data definitions” and then easily present them in the CMS to an editor, and output them to the live site as well.

You could create every custom field you can possibly think of, and just use the ones you want on any given entry. Why limit your options?
I tihnk Robert has a point. Custom Fields become very messy after awhile , because one can't selectively show or hide custom field except through the display menu. Entries can become bogged down in custom fields.
It would be useful to define an entry for example in a category news, then only show 'news' related custom field for that category type.
I am practicing, prefixing my customs fields, with either page_ or entry_ this makes it a liitle easier to use, but in general, Movable Type doesn't respect or keep the visibility setting you set for your custom fields and this is a problem.
Drupal's Custom Content Module, is super useful in this respect, allowing you to create your own archive types, add whatever fields you feel appropriate, mp3's , text, images etc..
