Asset manager - add file from URL or file system?

Is there a plugin for the asset manager that adds the ability to add file(s) by entering a URL or location on the existing file system, vs. uploading a file from your local machine?

I’m aware of Better File Uploader, but I’m looking for something that modifies the asset manager itself.
