I woke up today to find the Time to Upgrade! screen when I tried to log in. Trouble is, I haven't changed a thing. Anyone know what might be going on? I'm worried about clicking the Begin Upgrade button. (4.2 pro)

Does that include not installing any new plugins lately?
Yes, it does. Nothing new changed at all. It's basically telling me the whole thing needs upgrading:

Huh. Is it possible that your host restored your database from a backup without telling you? I'd go take a look at your database and make sure that it's in the same state you remember it being in. If that's not the issue, I would suggest that you backup your database with phpMyAdmin or something similar, and just see what happens if you upgrade.
That's what occurred to me, too, so I clicked on a dynamically-generated page (page 2 of my index) and it appears to be correct. Also, Hostgator stopped auto-backing up my account when I went over 50K inodes, so if they restored it would likely be months out of date.
I've backed up the database, but things get a little bit black box for me at this point so I worry.
I also found this old thread:

people seem to have a similar problem and some lose templates. That would be annoying since I'd have to install an old db backup to a new installation, then get in and copy all the templates over...uggg.
I'll click and see what happens...how bad could it be? heheheh...heh?
I went ahead and popped the upgrade. It said it was upgrading from 3.2! All went OK, no smoke. Will have to go a bit before I notice if anything's missing, or if this becomes a recurring problem. Thanks for your suggestions, Mike T.
No problem. I would recommend making a habit of backing up your database. That way, you can compare its state with previous versions. My hunch is that someone or something changed some schema_version values in the configuration table.
Has anyone discovered a solution to this problem?
I'm having it with 4.25. You seem to lose the templates because it has the 3.x templates stored away somewhere and reverts to those. In my case I have them as linked files in a single directory and have learned to back them up after this problem happens.
Is it possible for somebody to outline where exactly in the database the version, etc is kept so that I can back that up and maybe attempt to patch it next time this happens? thanks!
FYI, I'm still having this intermittent issue. Fortunately, it only seems to change my registration settings on two blogs and deletes my system email setting -- things I can fix easily. I came back here, long after having forgotten this thread, because it came up high in a Google search for the problem (and still no solution here).
