Resetting basenames

Vote 0 Votes

I've been blogging with MT for nearly 5 years, starting with MT 2.661. My entry basenames are all short, except for the entries created in MT 4.21 when I set the basename length longer.

My entries, however, are currently published using the entry ID. I'm going to change that to use the basename, but I'd like to reset the basename on all my entries to reflect the longer basename before I do so.

I've found Brad Choate's entrysetbasename plugin, but that's designed to address the change in dirify, not simply to reset the basename.

How do I reset them?

Hi. I don't know if it's possible to do that in a direct way. What happens if you simply republish the previously published entries AFTER changing the blog to use basenames instead of the entry ID?

If that doesn't work, you might try this. But take a database backup first!!!

After you change the blog so that it uses the basename rather than the id...

Use the Export function to export the Entries.

Delete all the entries using the regular MT Manage Entries page.

Import the exported files you just created.

    Publish the site.

The entries should all be created using the basename.

No guarantee, but I *think* that might work (I've never actually published using the entry ID.)

  • I've decided to give up on it on account of me applying a new template set which reset my archive mappings unexpectedly. So, I've got to get some redirects in place ASAP and live with the basenames as is.

    Oh well.

  • OK, I'm not giving up just yet. I reverted to my old templates through a database backup and I'd like to reset all my basenames to the new, longer names if that's possible before I switch back.

Is this possible? BloggyThingy's idea seems a little extreme and risky.

  • This script may be of use to people wanting to reset their entry basenames.

  • That would have been handy, but I've made the switch and I don't want to add a bunch more redirects.

If you need to share template code, replace all the "<" signs with "<" or use this utility.
