Can't find mt-static directory

Vote 0 Votes

I have Movable Type installed on my Web server and have gotten the wizard to run, but when it asks me to configure a static path to the mt-static directory, it tells me it can't find that directory, even though it's at the root level of my site. I use Gate.com, and their SQL, PHP and Perl support are above the minimum requirements. I tried putting the static path in as http://www.mysite.com/mt-static and just as /mt-static, and the wizard won't accept either one. Any ideas?

  • I would create the mt-config file manually.

  • Tried that, instead of the wizard I got an error page saying my "localhost" couldn't be found. (I put localhost in place of my actual server name.)

    • If you got a HTTP 404 error when accessing the value for StaticPath, it's safe to assume that you're not putting mt-static in the right place for your host.

  • No, it wasn't a 404 error, it was an error inside the Movable Type wizard. I take your point about the right location for the mt-static folder, but as I don't have a public folder or an http folder at the root level of my server, I can't quite figure out where it should be otherwise. I'll check with my host, but I'm not optimistic.

    • As long as they can give you a public folder and a suitable local directory for it, you'll be fine. If they give you a hard time, and shared hosting is enough for you, I'd recommend Hosting Matters. I've used them for a while now, and they used to host Instapundit before PajamasMedia took over that responsibility. They have a top notch reliability for bloggers.

  • I am considering a different host, though my site is Christmas-oriented and I don't think now is a good time to make that change. I just don't understand how the wizard can't find the mt-static folder at the root level of the server. When I type in the url http://mysite.com/mt-static/ the host sends back the message "mt-static = OK." The wizard supplies a static file path that is consistent with the one I get when I run the host's Perl utility in the control panel, but it simply refuses to find either /mt-static or http://mysite.com/mt-static. So I'm inclined to look for solutions on the Movable Type end rather than the host end.

    • Understandable. I'd get on your host's case pronto about this, though. However, if they don't give you any real resolution of this issue, I know from personal experience with them that Hosting Matters' tech support are very quick at switching over things like your site's DNS settings to get you and running ASAP if you need to change hosts.

  • I finally got it working. I still don't know why the wizard didn't want to find the mt-static directory, but I went back to Rob Kenny's advice and created the mt-config file manually. The first few times I got the error I described above, but my host had given me an IP number when my SQL database didn't appear to be working, so I substituted the IP number for the "localhost" name, and voila -- install city! Thanks everyone for your help.

  • I also am having this problem. Fyi, im a noob to this, back end website stuff isnt my strong point. I just want to add a blog page to my website. I dont understand what I could possibly have done wrong. I have followed every step by step instruction there is, deleted and started over countless times, and checked with my host (media temple) to be sure everything is enabled etc... what did you do exactly Rudolph?

  • nm resolved

  • I having the same problem... it bizarre, and I'm my own host. So I'm restarting the server to see what happens....

  • Hi, I also have Media Temple and am experiencing this identical problem. Leah, how did you resolve the problem? If it's something on the hosting side, is there a specific setting I should ask them to change?

    I don't have the know-how to install manually ...

    Thanks!

  • Hi Guys,

A possible reason for this is that you have something after 'mt-static' (like a slash or something)

Make sure your mt-static folder is:

    http://www.domain.com/mt-static

And that your 'mt-static' folder is uploaded on the right place!

For instance, some servers have two main folders, one for cgi-bin and another one for html.

Make sure you place mt under the cgi-bin folder and mt-static under the html folder (you may by mistakce place mt-static outside the html folder).

The name of this html folder may vary from service to service. It could be:

    1) public_html

    2) html

    3) or right the domain name (domain.com).

    Cheers,
    Mihai

  • Well, it appears that I needed to remove the trailing slash. I had had "http://mydomain/mt-static/" so I changed it to "http://mydomain/mt-static" and now it works.

Though I could swear that's what I had started with. Anyway, thank you! I seem to be in.

    M.

  • You're very welcome Alarix!

If you need to share template code, replace all the "<" signs with "<" or use this utility.
