hi all- i'm trying to configure comments for a page i'm building and am running across a very strange error:
at first, i disabled the comment confirmation page, assuming this would mean that after a commenter submits their comment they will automatically return to the entry page. this did not happen though - the commenter would remain stuck on the original page as the script took 5-10 minutes to load, then lead to a blank screen.
so i re-enabled the confirmation page and comments would go through! so i went on to customize the 'comment response' template to make it match the rest of the site.
except as soon as i change anything on the template, the problem reverts back to the extremely long loading time. i don't understand - i didn't tweak any of the mt tags, only added my own style tags. why is it completely slowing down the script?

Use the comment confirmation page and enable template caching - that's the key. Template caching is very finicky, so be sure you know what you're doing. You may need to rearrange your templates a bit to make them easily cacheable.
I went from having 3,4,5 or more minutes comment times to less than 15 seconds by doing this - and we have about 35,000 comments in our system with over 6,000 entries.
