Hi Michelle,

Not sure if this is relevant but Maarten just explained the following to me.

The "role" assigned to users who sign up using the "register" link is controlled by the empty user "(newly created user)". Whatever permissions are assigned to this user will be assigned to new users created by the system.

I'm also experiencing this problem...

I think I temporarily enabled Author for new users but have since reset this back to just Commenter...but new users still get Author permissions!

Control Panel says Commenter but actually gives Author - is there a re-start needed somewhere? Does anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks.
