MT 4.2 and plugins

Vote 0 Votes

As a rule, how should MT 4.2 work with plugins designed for MT4? Is it a reasonable expectation that if it worked on MT 4.x, it'll work on MT 4.2?

  • I have plugins written around the time of 2.x that haven't been updated since and work fine. The plugin API is extremely stable in general.

That said, you'll have to just find out case by case.

  • That makes sense, but I seem to remember that 3.2 (or was it 3.0?) broke a bunch of plugins and 4.0 did as well, I just wondered if there was anything in 4.2 that would lead to the same thing.

  • To my knowledge, there is nothing in 4.2 that should break plugins written for 4.0 :)

  • I tried the Visitor Stars plugin and something happens when you upgrade to 4.2 It won't recognize some tags and I got an error when trying to access MT.

  • Generally speaking, most plugins that work 4.1 should "just work" on 4.2. That said, some plugins will need to be updated (included some of mine). It really depends on what the plugins does and how much it replies on the core code and/or admin templates of each version of MT.

(Carlo, please shoot me an email with details re:Visitor Stats, if you haven't already done so. The plugin seems to work on 4.2 for me, and I haven't heard about errors like that that yet)

  • Actually, you're right Mark. I made a fresh install of MT4.2 and then installed the Visitor Stats Pro plugin and it's working fine. Still haven't tested it publishing any files but i'll get on that to see if everything goes right.

  • I've been using VERY (written for 2.x or 3.x) old plugins that have not been updated since and they STILL work in 4.2. One good example will be the PhotoGallery.pl 1.1.1.0 or embedimage.pl 1.21 or MTPaginate 1.28. This is Movable Type not Wordpress!

  • I upgraded from MT 4.12b > 4.2, and suddenly could not get the following plugins to work, even on a clean blog install: Seesmic Video Comment, and Ajax Comments.

    • AjaxComments(whatever's currently latest) works just fine under 4.2. There must be something off about either your installation or implementation of it. I don't know anything about the Seesmic plugin.
