What would you like to see changed in this forum software?

Jim is working on some tweaks to these forum templates and I was curious if the community here has any feedback for us to help give us some direction in what we may or may not want to consider doing.

I for one am wanting to:

  • get rid of the favoriting count on the front door - there are two many numbers and the one we should focus on is the number of replies, not the number of favorites.

  • give a little more room to forum topics, and less room to commenter avatars on the front door. it seems difficult to maintain the integrity of the page with the current layout.

These are two areas in which we want to improve. There are others of course too, but I would like to hear from you folks!

    • Topic subscription - I think you've got to be able to be notified if there are replies in a topic you're interested in. Email, obviously, although there should probably be per category feeds that contain all new activity - ie topics and replies
    • Finding a way to highlight or filter "new activity" - ie stuff that's happened since I last logged in. It's one of the most useful features of the Invision based forums.
    • Fixing personal profiles (currently they are erroring)
  • A bit more on the highlight new activity. Might be an interesting use of the Action Stream stuff.

I saw this over at the Atlassian blog - and immediately thought that might be quite a nice way to show activity on here: http://blogs.atlassian.com/developer/2008/02/communicatingacrossproducts.html

  • Profiles are now working again. Terribly sorry for the borkage. As it turns out I was referencing a globally shared header that was trying to invoke template tags that require a blog context. Because profiles exist outside of a blog context, they were dying. Ooops. Fixed, by wrapping blog specific template tags in:

    <MTIfBlog>...</MTIfBlog>

  • Oh - and BTW, I am working on making profiles look better.

    • Sign-in - Let us sign in with Open-ID or our TypeKey ID
    • Formatting tips - This is my first post and I have no idea what's allowed (Hope this HTML is OK. Can we use BB code?)
    • Post preview - It would be good to see what our formatted posts will look like as I don't see an Edit button anywhere.
    • Links to old forum archives - There's no content here. There were several years of content on the old forums. 4.1 doesn't invalidate all of that accumulated knowledge.
  • @Bill - I am not sure these new forums are ready to replace our forums located at forums.sixapart.com. I think there is still a lot of room for these to improve before importing all of that old data into this site.

  • I would the last reply dates to work. On the front page all the last reply dates are the date of the original post, so your post here on the 4th March shows as 28th Feb on the forum home.

  • Also, I keep get JavaScript errors. This is a modified comment form but it is still looking for things like the remember me check box, which does not exist.
